Electronic proof of identity – eID card
The new eID card promises secure, simple, and highly trusted online identification, as well as digital handling of administrative and business matters. This can be applied for by any EU citizen who is at least 16 years old. The eID card is designed exclusively for online use and does not serve as an identification document or travel document.

The fee for issuing an eID card is 37.00 euros. It is valid for 10 years, after which it must be reapplied for.
Collection and processing time
Collection and processing time
The processing time at the federal printing office is approximately four weeks. It can be collected after you receive the PIN letter. As a matter of principle, the visit must be made in person.

PIN reset and activation service
Anyone who would like to use the online ID card, but first needs to activate it, can do so online at the website www.pin-ruecksetzbrief-bestellen.de. The activation code and the new PIN for the online ID card will be sent to your home by post.
